How to keep your SMM panel from getting hacked
PanelHubs Team · · 5 min read
Most SMM panels that get "hacked" are not broken into through some clever technical trick. Someone gets hold of an admin password, a staff login, or a leaked API key, and walks in through the front door. That is good news, because it means most of the protection is in your hands.
Keep your own accounts tight, give staff only what they need, turn on two-factor sign-in, treat every key like cash, and learn to spot phishing. The platform handles the server side; you handle the people side.
Admin hygiene: your account is the master key
Your owner account can change prices, edit balances, add payment methods and read every customer's details. Protect it accordingly.
- Use a unique, long password. Never reuse the password from your email, social accounts or another panel. A password manager makes this easy.
- Secure the email behind it. Whoever controls your email can often reset your passwords. Give your email its own strong password and two-factor sign-in too.
- Sign in only on devices you trust. Avoid shared computers in cafes or offices. If you must use one, sign out and clear the browser afterwards.
- Watch your sign-in alerts. PanelHubs sends new sign-in alerts. If you get one you don't recognise, change your password straight away.
- Keep your phone locked. Your phone holds your authenticator app, email and payment apps. A screen lock is basic but essential.
Staff roles: give only what each person needs
As your panel grows, you will bring in help: someone to answer tickets in Kampala, someone to manage services in Kigali. Do not share your owner login with them. Create a separate staff account for each person and give it only the permissions that job needs.
A support agent usually needs to see orders and reply to tickets. They rarely need to change payment gateways or edit providers. On PanelHubs, staff accounts have roles and permissions and an activity log, so you can see who did what and when. If something odd happens, the log tells you where to look. When someone leaves, disable their account the same day.
Two-factor sign-in for everyone
Two-factor authentication (2FA) asks for a second code, usually from an app on your phone, after the password. A stolen password alone is then not enough to get in. PanelHubs supports two-factor sign-in for owners, staff and customers.
Turn it on for yourself first, then require it from staff. Encourage customers to use it too, especially resellers with large balances. Store your backup codes somewhere safe and offline, not in a screenshot on the same phone. We explain the details in what two-factor authentication is and how it protects your panel.
Phishing: the most common way in
Phishing is a fake message that tries to get you to type your login somewhere it doesn't belong, or to install something harmful. Panel owners see a lot of it: fake provider notices, fake payment gateway warnings, fake "your panel will be suspended" emails, and messages pretending to be platform support.
- Check the address, not the name. A display name can say anything. Look at the actual sender and the actual link.
- Go there yourself. Instead of clicking a link in a message, type your panel's address or the gateway's address into the browser.
- Distrust urgency. "Act within one hour or lose your account" is a classic pressure tactic.
- Never share codes. No real support team needs your 2FA code or your password.
- Use the official channel. If you're unsure about a PanelHubs message, open a ticket in your owner portal and ask.
Payment gateway keys
When you connect Paystack, Flutterwave, M-Pesa, Stripe or any other gateway, you paste in keys from that gateway's dashboard. Those keys let software act on your merchant account, so treat them like the keys to your shop.
- Copy keys directly from the gateway dashboard into your panel. Don't send them through chat or email, even to staff.
- Use live keys only on your live panel, and test keys only for testing.
- Protect the gateway account itself with a strong password and 2FA.
- If you think a key leaked, regenerate it in the gateway's dashboard and update your panel.
- Check your gateway's transactions against your panel's payments from time to time. Odd gaps are worth a closer look.
API keys: provider and admin
Your panel uses provider API keys to place orders, and you may also create an Admin API key to automate admin tasks. A leaked provider key can drain your provider balance. A leaked Admin API key can be even more serious.
Keep each key in one place only, give automations only the keys they need, and rotate a key whenever someone with access leaves or you suspect a leak. Keep provider balances at a sensible level rather than loading months of funds at once; PanelHubs' low provider balance alerts help you top up in time without overfunding.
What PanelHubs handles for you
The server side is not your job on PanelHubs. Hosting, security updates and backups are included. Every panel gets automatic HTTPS, and domains sit behind Cloudflare protection, with DDoS protection and the server IP hidden. Each panel has its own separate database. PanelHubs staff can't edit admin balances or impersonate accounts. For bot sign-ups and spam, you can switch on a captcha such as reCAPTCHA or Cloudflare Turnstile in Modules.
That covers a lot, but no platform can protect a password you typed into a fake page. The two halves work together.
Getting started
Set aside one hour this week: change any reused passwords, turn on 2FA for yourself and your staff, review staff permissions, and check where your keys are stored. If you want a panel where the server side is already taken care of, you can start your PanelHubs panel and focus on the parts only you can protect.
